In the fall of 1987 an ad was placed in a local newspaper asking any Harley Davidson owners interested in forming a local chapter of the Harley Owners Group to meet and discuss starting a Chapter. Approximately twenty-five H.D. riders showed up to hear what a well known motorcycle enthusiast, Laurie Bell, had in mind. If enough people were interested Fred Deeley’s of Canada would be contacted.

October 1988 today’s charter members were registered as Central Chapter Nova Scotia Harley Owners Group At the first monthly meeting of the new year a voluntary executive board was formed as follows: Laurie Bell – Director, Everett Turner – Activities Coordinator, Brian Williams and Garnet Hill from our sponsoring dealer (Harley Davidson Dartmouth) were in charge of secretarial and financial responsibilities.

The first event planned by the now over sixty members, in May 1988, was to be at the dealership on Open House Day. We would host a ride in May featuring a Show & Shine and the first H.D. demo rides east of Montreal, followed by an evening Harbour cruise.

Later that summer our first group campout would become known as the Annual Run for The Hills. With the summer almost over, yet another party would be held – The Atlantic Regional Labour Day Rally. The poker run through the beautiful Annapolis Valley was followed by dinner and dance at our host hotel. This day’s events were a fine entrée to our cruise aboard the M.V. Shoreham to enchanted McNabs Island for an afternoon of fun in the sun followed by a three course meal and music. Little did we know that this Labour Day Weekend event would become an Atlantic tradition.

September brings us to the election time of year when changes were made to the executive board. The group sees a new treasurer Pat Loughran and Frederica Stewart becomes secretary.
With Christmas just around the corner it is decided that a social dinner for members would be a merry idea. On Dec.21st, 1988 the first annual Christmas dinner was born with a special biker menu and lots of Christmas cheer, hosted for us at the Old Mill Tavern.

The year being so close to over then, Laurie Bell decides there is time for just one more party; you guessed it a New Year’s Eve party for the good of the Chapter. Happy New Year boys and girls!
